The Haunting of Hill House: 4 Stars

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

Four people in one creepy old house: this usually is the start of a horror flick.  In this case, it's not wrong. A professor hell-bend on finding evidence of poltergeists, his assistant, the heir to the house, and woman with previous paranormal experience all meet in the home. The scares start off with simple "bumps in the night" type action, but it doesn't take long for the antics to escalate, leaving the four fearing for their lives.  One of them won't survive...but who?

Its a great book that keeps you on the edge or your seat and constantly wondering if it's really happening or are they just freaking themselves out. I loved this book and feel like I must read it again, but closer to Halloween.  Personally I love being scared!

I never watched scary movies or read scary books until I met my husband.  I guess I thought they were just cheesy (and 90% of them are). But every once in awhile you read that one book or watch that one movie that makes sleep come a little slower and the small sounds you hear alone sound sinister.  I love it!

Rating: PG-13

  1. Great review! I've been eyeing this book for so long; I have another one of her books on my shelf, waiting to be read, but I think this was the first book of hers that I added to my wishlist. Will definitely need to check it out one of these days :)

  2. I love this one too. And I watch the movie every Halloween (the black & white version, not the bad 1999 remake).
