Top Ten Books That Will Make You Cry

For this week's edition of Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by The Broke and The Bookish, they want to talk about books that will make you cry. The problem is, I don't cry over book.  I never have.  I guess I must be heartless...ha ha ha.  So I just listed ten sad books.

1. It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini: This one is sad because the books ends with so much hope, but then in reality, the author committed suicide.  So sad!

2. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee: This book always tugs at my heart strings.  Atticus is trying to hard to be a good man and make sure right prevails, but he knows the entire time he's fighting a losing battle.

3. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro: This book starts out and you know full well, it isn't going to end well.

4. The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion: This woman wrote this book after her husband dies unexpectedly.

5. The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank: Do I need to explain this one?

6. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by JK Rowling:  It's not called the DEATHLY hallows for nothing.

7. Boy21 by Matthew Quick: The two main boys in the book both live rather tragic lives.

8. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green: Teenagers with cancer....there is no way this won't be sad.

9. Calico Joe by John Grisham: This book is about a wonderful, humble young baseball player who shocks the world with his sheer talent.  But his fame is short lived, thanks to someone's jealousy.

10. Red Rain by R. L. Stine:This book is on here because it was terrible and frankly ruined my childhood a little bit.  I loved Goosebumps, but were they as poorly executed as this book?  I don't want to know!

  1. It looks like TFioS and Deathly Hallows are going to be popular titles this week; the latter definitely ended up on my list, there was one particular chapter that caught me unawares with the tears...

Never Let Me Go was quite sad too...

    1. I typical handle characters dying well in books. But in the Deathly Hallows, there is one death that I thin was just the worst and am still pretty upset about that one. (FW....seriously still mad).

    1. The Diary of Anne Frank still gets too me this day just because it's real and not a fictional representation. It just makes me think about her as a person. It's just heartbreaking. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to read my list!

  3. Great list, I thought that It's Kind of a Funny Story, The Fault in Our Stars and The Diary of Anne Frank were all very good and sad books. I was really surprised to find out just about Ned Vizzini's death just like two minutes ago because I was on his Wikipedia page in like November and he was alive and I found out he co-wrote two episodes of my favorite currently airing tv series and he was still coming out with books and now he's dead which is of course very sad but I don't think his death takes away from the message of the book because depression is something that a lot of people live with and he seemed to be able to live with it for a decade and on Wikipedia at least it said he had a wife and a kid so even though he ended his life even after getting help at least he was able to live that much longer and have a life even if it ended too soon.

    1. I totally agree. Before I had heard of the book and author, I saw the movie. Its a go-to "having a bad day and need cheered up" movie. It has such a great message.

  4. Oh, I totally forgot how much Never Let Me Go made me cry. I read it on the coach journey from London to Newcastle and got lots of funny looks and tissues.

    1. I never looked up what the book was about, I just grabbed it based on someone recommending it. About two chapters in, all I could think was "What have I gotten myself into?!"

  5. I've had It's Kind Of A Funny Story on my TBR list for a while. I really need to get on with reading it. I've heard such wonderful things about it. It's so sad about the author committing suicide. :-(

  8. I have only seen the movie adaptation of It's Kind of a Funny Story and it made me tear up! How much more if it's the book? Deathly Hollows and TFIOS made me cry too! T_T

  9. Excellent choices! I haven't read It's Kind of a Funny Story, though I did see the movie. I was really really sad when I heard about the author's suicide.

    1. The book itself is not horribly sad, but it was on my TBR list up until the author died. Then I finally decided to read it. I kinda wish I had read it before he died. His death gave the book a whole new tone.
